A classic Bal'mer row house. Historic brick nobody can duplicate, narrow, deep, steep skinny stairs, and old wood floors with stories to tell. Hun, if you've got one of these, you have got it goin' on!
I think I remember the resurrection of Baltimore beginning somewhere around my middle school years. Because not soon after that, as newly licensed drivers we all loved buzzing up 95 to the Inner Harbor on Saturdays. Awesome waterfront, shopping, restaurants, and the National Aquarium. Home away from home. The Aquarium's amazing glass pyramid roof capping the tropical rainforest and iconic neon blue wave, beautiful and simplified, welcoming us back and come play with the seals.
Once the Inner Harbor woke up, the revitalization seemed to spread right on down the docks. Fells Point, Little Italy, Canton... and thankfully with great appeal to architects and young execs alike. Keep it classic, my friends, keep it classic. The historic charm restored wherever possible, and better -- appreciated.
I haven't been back in the city for quite some time. My kids and I so love the Aquarium and had made frequent visits while they grew up, but nowhere near frequent or often enough. Maybe it's time for a ride.
In the meantime, seems to me the influx of the littles striking out into adulthood is represented well in Baltimore, Maryland. Lots of kids I've watched grow up have migrated there -- great city to start your adulting. And I can only imagine how their own parents feel, but I am beaming with pride when I get to draw their new house for them. The whole project oozes with love. I mean, it starts with their own hard 9 - 5 work which grows into their love for the neighborhood, which turns into their first big investment, then the local art & architecture history lesson which brings us to the blood, sweat, tears, checkbook, and gobs of elbow grease only to get topped off by the rooftop deck, a wreath on the front door, and a smile as big as life itself and that nobody can take away from you. I say Amen, sweet baby -- you've done good! And guess what? Your friends and your family are so proud of you. They asked me to draw this picture for you. "It's a surprise", they tell me. Well, heck yeah -- I'm in!
Congratulations, kiddo. Enjoy your new home!
